What should I bring to the Center on the day of my procedure?

Please bring your photo ID and insurance card, as well as any essential items. If you take multiple medications, please bring a list of them with you. Bring a case to store glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, or dentures. Avoid bringing jewelry or valuables. Lockers are available to store your clothing and belongings prior to your procedure.

What should I wear to the Center?

Wear comfortable clothing that is easily stored and removable. You will be asked to remove and store all removable jewelry prior to your procedure.

How long will I be at the Center for my procedure?

Most patients spend an average of 2-3 hours at the Center. Your adult escort (over age 18) does not have to be with you the entire time and you may call your escort once you are in the recovery area to coordinate pick-up.

I do not have an escort available. Can I still have my procedure?

An adult escort is required if you are receiving sedation for your endoscopic procedure. If you are unable to identify an escort, there are several services available for hire. Please contact the Center, and we will be happy to provide with a list of services.

What if I have piercings/jewelry that I cannot remove?

Please contact us to speak with a nurse or you may discuss with your physician.

What if I wear contact lenses?

What if I am on my menstrual cycle on the day of my procedure?

Menses will not affect your procedure. If you have additional questions, please contact your physician’s office directly.

What if I am breastfeeding?

In general, breastfeeding is considered to be safe after one is fully recovered from anesthesia. If you are breastfeeding, please discuss with your gastroenterologist prior to your procedure and notify the anesthesiologist on the day of your procedure.

Can I eat and/or drink before my procedure?

Please follow your pre-procedure instructions closely. In general, solid food is not permitted for 8 hours prior to a procedure. However, for patients undergoing colonoscopy, most physicians require a clear liquid diet for at least 24 hours in advance of the exam. Clear liquids (water, tea, black coffee, fruit juice without pulp, carbonated beverages) are permitted up until 2 hours prior to an endoscopic procedure. If you are taking medication on the morning of your procedure, you may do so with a few sips of water. Outside of this, there should be NOTHING BY MOUTH (no solids, liquids, gum, lozenges etc.) for at least 2 hours prior to your procedure.

Do I need to stop my medications before my procedure?

Essential medications may be taken with a few small sips of water on the morning of your procedure. Please review your medication list with your physician in advance of your procedure, particularly if you have diabetes or if you are taking blood thinning medication (aspirin, clopidogrel/Plavix, warfarin/Coumadin etc.). If possible, please bring a list of your current medications with you to Manhattan Endoscopy Center on your procedure day.

Please note that female patients under the age of 50 will be asked to provide a urine sample on the day of the procedure in order to perform a point of care pregnancy test. Please contact your physician’s office directly if you have any specific questions or concerns.
